For my final project, I recreated a bronze cast bird created during the Shang Dynasty of China (11th century BCE). The bird was originally designed to be a chariot finial. I was drawn to the bold gesture and form of the work and decided to recreate it in paint. This was the first time that I have endeavored to recreate a three dimensional work in paint, and I definitely struggled with certain aspects but learned a lot about the process and appreciated the time to study such an impressive, elegant work.
I have created a slide show of the original work and my own work, as well as my thoughts about what did and did not work. The link is as follows: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1-FwmDE9JREPv0lc1ihSdZB0jmXAcq-AUzEQA5DDgiVQ/edit?usp=sharing.
I look forward to seeing what everyone else chooses to recreate for this project!-

I crafted the Venus of Willendorf out of cookie dough for the final project. The figurine is one of the oldest pieces of art, dating back to paleolithic times. Although its exact purpose is not known with any certainty, many believe it to have been a fertility statue. Its unique shape and place in society earn it much recognition. For these reasons and more, I chose the figurine to recreate. The art piece and my adaptation are further explained in my essay and presentation.

For my final project, I attempted to draw an old bronze statue sculpted by the Etruscans during the 5th-4th century BCE, called the Chimera of Arezzo. Though this piece is not currently in our classes museum, I did research on it and worked on it for my second grant proposal. The mythological creature of the chimera fascinated me, so I wanted to work with it once again for our final. The drawing is a mixture of photoshop and my own art, so the medium is quite different from the original. Here are the links for my paper and slideshow:

Lucas, I love the final product! I think your drawing of the chimera on lined paper adds some more fun detail when you have it placed on the backdrop. How long did it take you to draw the beast?

For my final project, I drew the Snake Goddess. I was originally interested in trying to draw Alkyoneus the Giant being slain by Athena on the Pergamon Altar’s east frieze because it seemed like a fun challenge, but my printer would cooperate so I went with my next choice. But I had a lot of fun drawing the Snake Goddess and wanted to try and make her look a little more like an actual snake goddess since I feel like the original doesn’t quite give that feeling.

Based off of the quality of your depiction of the Snake Goddess, I would have liked to see the Alkyoneus the Giant being slain by Athena on the Pergamon Altar’s east frieze, and I’m curious as to what you would have changed about that, if anything.
-
March 24, 2019 at 3:15 pm #7206tmberganParticipant
MaKenna, if I had gone down that route, I was thinking of focusing more on Alkyoneus with a little bit of Athena’s arm in the background rather than trying to do the whole east frieze. I’m honestly not sure what I would have tried changing if I had done it. Thanks for the comment!

For my final art project, I choose the Mask of Warka. I found this piece captivating when we studied it earlier, so I thought this would be an interesting piece to replicate. As I am not the most artistic person, I thought clay would be interesting and a bit forgiving, however as I am on a budget for this I attempted to create my version in Play-Doh. Yay for having kiddos!!!

I took a little different approach in that I took a modern day image of Blue Babe at the UAF museum and transposed it with Procreate to create a new image of him as a Minoan Bull. I decided to learn and use Procreate at the same time as I was finishing this for a final. Not sure I would take that on again. Bob, I like your take on the bull! It’s definitely a creative way to try and recreate it. Is there anything you wish you would’ve done differently while you were working on it or were you pretty happy with it throughout the entire process? Was Procreate pretty easy to navigate or did it get a little frustrating?

Here is my final project. I chose to recreate the Bronze man and centaur from the Geometric time period in the mid-8th century. The original piece was made from bronze and I recreated it out of clay I use in my ceramics course. The original man and centaur were changed into two females and the fighting sculpture was changed into the women embracing. I thoroughly enjoyed this process and working with a new medium to recreate an ancient art sculpture.

I enjoyed working on this project a lot! One thing that I really like about the technique I used is that it isn’t too difficult to make something that looks really cool, and that contributes something different to the original piece. Several image filters exist to automatically create something akin to my recreation (for instance posterize) but I think ultimately having a human making decisions about what lines to include and which tones to fill with creates a far more interesting effect. All in all, very fun! I hope you enjoy what I created too.
-
April 10, 2019 at 7:48 pm #7606Raven ShawParticipant
Wow that is cool! It looks like a topographical map of a statue. I’m glad you mentioned that you know there are filters to do something similar, but that you made the decisions by yourself instead. The original was a striking piece, so I’m not surprised to see that you chose her.

I did a recreation of the Nike of Samothrace, the beautiful marble sculpture we saw in the hellenistic period. I recreated it with watercolor & ink on paper, and changed her wings out for bat wings. I wanted to incorporate both Christian elements and Greek elements in attempts to kind of link the two vastly different parts of history together, and I drew inspiration from the works and illustrations of Gustave Dore.
