Hello everyone and welcome to Week 3 of ART F261X.

Please do the following before 11:59pm, Sunday, September 18th.

1. Go through the material in the Art of Ancient Egypt wing.

2. Respond to the discussion questions posted in the Slack channels #week3part1 and #week3part2.   Remember to comment on at least two of your classmate’s responses.

Slack channel #week3part1

  • Egyptian culture and Mesopotamian culture developed simultaneously but each had different priorities and followed different artistic conventions. As we read about last week, Mesopotamian rulers used art and architecture to legitimize their right to rule.  Compare and contrast how Egyptian rulers legitimized their power and right to rule through their art and architecture?

Slack channel #week3part2

  • The Ancient Greek historian Herodotus wrote that the Egyptians were the most religious people he had ever come across. How is the relationship between man (and women) and the gods evident in the art that they create?

The Doctor Jones Institute of Lost Treasure is asking for proposals to include a new work of art in the museum. The Institute has noticed that there is room in the following wings: Prehistoric, Ancient Near Eastern, Egyptian, and the Ancient Aegean. What work (that is not already discussed as part of the class) do you think deserves to be included in the museum halls? Tell us why you think it is so important. How does it fit in with the other works in the wing? How does it expand our understanding of Prehistoric, Ancient Near Eastern, Egyptian, or Ancient Aegean Art?

Please follow the instructions under the tab Course Documents -> Grant Proposals to submit your entries. All proposals are due by 11:59pm on Sunday, October 2.
