Hello everyone and welcome to Week 2 of ART F261X.

Please do the following before 11:59pm, Sunday, June 4.

1. Go through the material in the following wings: Art of the Ancient Near East and the Art of Ancient Egypt.

2. Respond to the discussion questions posted in the Slack channels #week2part1 and #week2part2. Remember to comment on at least two of your classmate’s responses.

Slack channel week2part1

  • Ruling Mesopotamia: How did the rulers of different Mesopotamian cultures visually show their power and legitimize their right to rule? Additionally, how have some of these same sites and monuments been used by modern political forces?  Use examples in your response.

Slack channel #week2part2

  • The Gods of Ancient Egypt: The Ancient Greek historian Herodotus wrote that the Egyptians were the most religious people he had ever come across. How is the relationship between man (and women) and the gods evident in the art that they create?

3. Turn in your first Grant Proposal via Canvas. Instructions for this assignment can be found here.

Call For Proposals

The Doctor Jones Institute of Lost Treasure is asking for proposals to include a new work of art in the museum. The Institute has noticed that there is room in the following wings: Prehistoric, Ancient Near Eastern, or Egyptian. What work (that is not already discussed as part of the class) do you think deserves to be included in the museum halls? Tell us why you think it is so important. How does it fit in with the other works in the wing? How does it expand our understanding of the art we have seen these first two weeks.
